POLICE recorded 51 fewer crimes in the Worth Valley over the last 12 months compared to the previous civic year.

The figure was reported to members of Oxenhope Parish Council during the village's annual parish meeting last Wednesday. (April 15)

Police constable Eddie Irving said the drop roughly amounted to a 30 per cent decrease in burglaries, though did warn of a small increase in thefts from vehicles.

"We are aware of someone who has moved into the Oxenhope area who is on bail for criminal offences," he added.

He noted that West Yorkshire Police have had to sustain a big decrease in officer numbers over the last few years, and that this reduction was set to continue.

PC Irving said the police were keen to tackle this by recruiting volunteers who would be prepared to give a minimum of 16 hours per month to work as special constables.
