A HIGHFIELD woman claims her pet cat has been mauled to death by local terror dogs.

She believes the ageing cat fell prey to a pair of dogs that regularly run wild in nearby streets.

The animals are allegedly let out onto Burgess’ Field, a recreation ground off Highfield Road, each morning without supervision to do their business.

The incident comes only weeks after reports that an Japanese Akita-type dog had attacked several people and other dogs in the Highfield area.

The woman, who said she had been advised by police not to reveal her name, let her cat out early last Friday morning as usual.

She said: “At that point I didn’t know these two dogs were out. One man had seen them charging up Redcliffe Street and Highfield Road.

“They had ripped my cat apart and his body was covered in dog saliva. I pray he died instantly. It was awful.”

The woman and her family adopted their male cat about five years ago after it was rescued by an animal charity.

She is a volunteer with the Friends of Burgess’ Field, and said such attacks undermined members’ efforts to attract more people to use the recreation ground.

Users of the Keighley Facebook pages this week reported dog attacks last weekend in neighbourhoods around Highfield of Keighley.

Two boys allegedly let their dog kill a duck at Keighley Tarn on Saturday, and a woman’s dog was reportedly attacked by a husky in Braithwaite on Sunday.

In February, retired artist and lecturer man Barry Brewood was walking his seven-year-old Jack Russell-whippet cross, Lady, when it was attacked by an Akita.

Police were called to a similar incident in the same area later the same day, and reports of several attacks were reported on social media.

Police found several people in the Highfield area that owned dogs matching the description of the one involved in the attacks, and advised all owners of their responsibilities.
