KNITTERS are needed for an Airedale Hospital project to help dementia patients.

Volunteers are being sought to create 'Twiddlemuffs', brightly coloured muffs.

The items, which provide an eye-catching distraction for patients, have been piloted on Ward 9 and proved a huge success.

They will be launched more widely during national Dementia Week, which starts on Monday.

Knit-and-natter groups are being recruited to help produce the muffs.

Knitting patterns and information about the initiative will be posted online at airedale-trust.nhs.uk.

Senior nurse Sara Robinson said: "Around a quarter of the patients we care for live with dementia and these Twiddlemuffs may help settle them down.

"They can also provide a source of stimulation and distraction.

"Our team recently held a coffee morning which raised £270 for Dementia UK. Now we are looking for people who love to knit who will find it really rewarding to help our patients."
