A KEIGHLEY councillor has been appointed Bradford's deputy lord mayor.

Central ward Labour councillor Abid Hussain has been chosen for the role, and will serve alongside his wife Shahnaz Akhtar who is the deputy lord mayor's consort.

Cllr Hussain, who lives in Devonshire Street and has been on the district council since 2010, said: "I'd like to thank the Labour group which has shown great faith in me, and also the people of Keighley who voted for me to be a councillor. I wouldn't be here without them.

"This is a big responsibility and I'll be giving my full commitment to all communities."

Cllr Hussain, who has lived in Keighley for more than 45 years, is deputy chairman of Bradford Council's Keighley and Shipley Area Planning Panel and chairman of the miscellaneous licenses panel.

He also sits on the regulatory & appeals and licensing committees.

He is a former pupil of the old Hartington Middle School and Greenhead, and has a diploma in textile management from Bradford College.

Cllr Hussain and his wife will be representing the district at those civic functions and other events which the new lord mayor – Cllr Joanne Dodds – is unable to attend.
