A FORMER South Craven School pupil will be living on £1 a day for a week – to get cash so she can volunteer in Bangladesh.

Hester Thomas, of Sutton, is trying to raise £800 on the Live Below the Line challenge so that she can join other young people over the summer in a project run by aid organisation Y Care International.

The 18-year-old, who is in her first year studying physics at Birmingham University, will work in the country helping to provide education to vulnerable children and protecting women's rights.

The project is part of work undertaken by the YMCA in Bangladesh as part of the British Government-backed International Citizen Service, which provides volunteering opportunities for 18-25-year-olds.

Hester said: "I wanted to volunteer because it's a fantastic opportunity to gain new skills and experience new things and cultures. I want to help communities that need help - supporting youth in developing countries is very important.”

She needs to raise the £800 as her contribution to the cost of a three-month stay in the country.
