A BRICK forming part of the grounds of an expanded library in Haworth has been paid for by Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council.

But this library is a very long way from Haworth, West Yorkshire!

The library is in the small suburb of Haworth New Jersey, in the United States, which was named after the original town in Yorkshire by a fan of the Bronte sisters.

As reported in the Keighley News last year, the Friends of Haworth New Jersey Library had contacted their namesake village in England to ask if it would consider helping to fund its library's expansion as a gesture of "Haworth pride".

The parish council in Keighley district's Haworth considered the request and responded. A spokesman for the council explained: "Earlier this year we gifted $100 – £64 – to sponsor a brick at the library in Haworth, New Jersey.

"Two residents from our village recently dropped into the library to see the labelled brick. Chris and Helen Myers paid a visit as part of their recent trip to America."
