A KEIGHLEY mum recalled first aid training from 15 years ago to start resuscitating a man who had collapsed in the street.

Hairdresser Susan Bennett rushed to the man's aid after spotting him lying in Kensington Street, Keighley.

"It looked like he was having a seizure – his lips were turning blue and his eyes were rolling back in his head," she said.

"His breath was rattling then it stopped completely and he went very still. I couldn't feel a pulse."

Mrs Bennett, 37, gave the casualty – believed to be in his 60s – CPR.

"I'd done first aid years ago and I couldn't remember the exact details but still knew the basics," she said.

"He was lying on his side but was propped up against a car so I couldn't roll him fully onto his back.

"Then a man ran up and he turned him onto his back properly. He started doing chest compressions while I did mouth-to-mouth.

"Shortly afterwards an ex-nurse came and took over, then a doctor arrived and helped him till the paramedics arrived. The paramedics were there in about ten minutes."

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance also attended and the man – who hasn't been named, but is believed to be in his 60s – was flown to Leeds General Infirmary, where he is now recovering.

Mrs Bennett, from the Fell Lane area, said there was little time to think during the emergency and the full impact only hit her afterwards.

She now plans to renew her first aid training and will also enrol her two sons on courses.

Sarah Winder – a director of Winder Boats, close to where the man became ill – praised Mrs Bennett's actions.

"This lady and the people who turned up to help her did a wonderful job," she said.
