A KEIGHLEY-district amateur rugby league player has died while on holiday in Greece.

Social media has been inundated with tributes to 23-year-old Danny Kelly, who was on a break on the Greek island of Zakynthos.

It is believed he drowned in the Ionian Sea on Monday.

Mr Kelly had played for Cowling Harlequins and Worth Village amateur rugby league teams.

It is the second tragic death this year to rock Keighley's rugby community, following the death of 29-year-old Keighley Cougars player Danny Jones during a game in May.

No one from Mr Kelly's family was available for comment, but according to his Facebook page he lived in Haworth.

Posting on his own page, Mr Kelly's older brother Liam said: "My best friend, my baby brother I still can't believe you're gone.

"I love and miss you more than words can describe.

"Thank you to everyone paying their respects and all the kind words. Sorry I haven't replied, it's purely due to the fact that I can't bear to read them. "Heartbroken doesn't come close to how I feel. I've lost my right arm and just want my baby brother home."

Darren Greenwood, player coach for Cowling Harlequins, said: "As a club we are devastated, it's a very sad time for us. He was an absolutely lovely lad, really dedicated to his team whenever he played for us. No one had a bad word to say about him.

"He'd been with us for two or three years on and off. His family have come up before and watched him play.

"His older brother Liam plays for Keighley Albion and his younger brother Sam plays for Worth Village.

"It's all still quite raw, and officially we don't yet know exactly what happened."

He added that he and the rest of the team wanted to hold an event in memory of Mr Kelly as soon as it can be arranged.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Zakynthos, Greece on August 24.

"We are liaising closely with local authorities and are in contact with the family to provide support.”

Mr Kelly's death was also announced by Keighley Cougars, who paid their respects online to his family and team mates.

A spokesman for Worth Village Worth Village Amateur Rugby Football League Club said: "We would like to send our condolences to Danny Kelly's family at this very sad time. RIP Danny Kelly."

Posting on the same club's Facebook site, page member Ian Mitchell wrote: "Saved all the photos posted of Danny Kelly. He was like a son to me, love him to bits.

"My son's best pal, always at mine, always smiling and happy. So sad for what's happened to him, RIP lovely Danny. God bless him."
