MEMBERS of the Morton in Bloom group will be boosting their profile at an event in the village this weekend.

They are staging a public event on the village green on Saturday, which will also mark 30 years since the school which used to occupy this site was knocked down.

East Morton resident and group member Jo Dix explained: "After winning gold last year in Yorkshire in Bloom we decided we didn’t have enough volunteers to enter In Bloom this year.

"To publicise the group we are going to celebrate 30 years of the village green. It was originally the site of the village school and 30 years ago the school was demolished, the area landscaped and taken into the care of the village.

"On Saturday between 10.30am and midday we will be on the Green with free refreshments, a display of photos and plans and guided walks around the Morton in Bloom 'estate'".

Jo stressed that despite the fact the group is not entering the 2016 Yorkshire in Bloom contest, it remains active.

"We still aim to provide people with a pleasant environment, because it enhances people's enjoyment of their surroundings," she added.

"We do get a lot of nice comments from passing motorists and walkers, but we would like more people to get involved.

"Much of what we do might not be so obvious to people.

"There is a lot of watering needed during the summer, which can be quite hard work.

"And as well as the plants around the Green we also have wild flowerbeds around the back of the recreation ground, more beds in the church yard, plants at the entrance to the village and Vicarage Lane – which is a nice little walk around the recreation ground."
