A COUPLE are celebrating being married in Keighley exactly 60 years ago today.

Barbara and Dennis Bradley tied the knot in the old Devonshire Street Congregational Church in 1955.

The couple had first started going out in 1952 after attending a Keighley Rugby Football League Club game in Lawkholme Lane.

Mrs Bradley, now 81, said: "We were both in the same choir and a group of us went to the match.

"Dennis took me to where we could have a better vantage point in the club ground, and that was the start of it.

"We've had a very peaceful married life – we haven't had a lot of falling outs.

"We are very well matched. I've been lucky to find someone like Dennis first time, as I was only 18 when we started going out and only 21 when we were married."

Mrs Bradley was born in Devonshire Street, Keighley, and Mr Bradley, now 84, was born in Bradford.

They initially lived in Beechcliffe following their marriage, then in Riddlesden, before moving to Bingley in 1959.

Mrs Bradley worked as a dress maker, then later as a non-teaching assistant at Crossflatts First School.

Her husband served his two years of National Service in the Royal Air Force, then became a pilot plant manager for the Bradford Dyers Association.

Both husband and wife retired together in 1991. They have a son, David, and a daughter, Lesley, as well as three grandchildren.

Mrs Bradley was heavily involved in the local Scouting movement, and was part of Second Riddlesden Scouts from 1967 to 2013.

She started out as assistant Cub Scout leader, then became Cub Scout leader and assistant district commissioner for Scouts in Keighley.

She added: "Dennis was a very supportive husband. He wasn't involved in Scouting himself, but he always looked after me and took me to where I needed to go.

"I really enjoyed it. It's the best youth movement you can possibly think of. I'm a great believer in the good Scouting and Guiding can do."
