THREE people were taken to hospital after breathing in smoke during a severe fire in a bedroom at a three-storey block of flats in Keighley yesterday afternoon.

A man who tried to tackle the fire using a bucket of water was taken to hospital along with two women after the fire in Harewood Rise, Bracken Bank at around 4.30pm.

The occupants from four flats have been rehoused as a result of smoke and fire damage.

One woman had to be rescued via a window by a firefighter on a ladder.

A fire crew from Keighley revived an unconscious cat by giving it oxygen, and a crew from Bingley also attended the incident.

Keighley station watch commander Mick Rhodes said: "The flat's occupants were made aware of the fire in the bedroom via a smoke detector, showing the importance of having working detectors.

"This was quite a serious fire, but it could have been a lot worse. The fire itself was confined to the bedroom but this room was completely gutted and there was heavy smoke damage to the rest of the flat."

He said firefighters had needed to smash windows in order to help vent some of the smoke.

He added that he could not yet confirm the cause of the blaze, and said fire service investigators remained at the scene well into the night.
