A PLEA has been issued for volunteer drivers to help with this year's Keighley poppy appeal.

The SOS was sounded this week by appeal organiser Tommy Thompson, who is currently unable to drive himself after slipping and breaking his left arm.

"There's never a good time to break your arm but this couldn't have happened at a worse time!" said ex-soldier Mr Thompson.

"We have about 300 poppy collection boxes to deliver to shops, businesses and schools across the Keighley area.

"We're looking for anybody with their own vehicle who can just spare a little time to help distribute the boxes over the next few weeks and collect them later.

"It is a voluntary role but people will be paid petrol expenses so they won't be out of pocket.

"And it is an extremely rewarding and social thing. You are meeting lots of people while out and about."

He said the Keighley Royal British Legion poppy appeal had continued to grow in recent years.

Last year, a record £40,000-plus was raised.

"Thanks to the generosity of the Keighley public and the support of our fantastic small team of volunteers it has just got bigger and bigger every time," said Mr Thompson.

"We are very grateful to everyone who has contributed and we would love to once again set a new record this year.

"Our particular need is for drivers, but we would also like to hear from anybody who would be willing to help in other ways.

"We rely on volunteers for the poppy appeal to be a success."

His comments are echoed by the Legion's community fundraiser for West Yorkshire, Debbie Westlake.

"The amount raised each year in Keighley is wonderful and we would urge people to come forward to help ensure this year is another success," she added.
