DISABLED athletes and starving families will benefit from handouts by a Keighley charitable group.

The Keighley Co-op Members Group, which is disbanding, decided to distribute its remaining funds to local worthy causes.

They have given £80 each to the Salvation Army food bank, Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure, and SKT Welfare which runs a soup kitchen at the Sangat Centre.

The Co-op group was made up of members of the Cooperative Society and has traditionally raised money for charity, but membership has dwindled Bingley in recent years.

It was active for many years in the community and supported charities such as Haworth Riding for the Disabled and Bradford-based Christians Against Poverty.

Keighley councillor and Co-op secretary Barry Thorne and his wife Trisha, a Co-op member, went along to the Sangat Centre in Marlborough Street, Keighley, to hand over the cheque.

Cllr Thorne said SKT Welfare was one of the best projects of its kind that he had seen.

He said: “The food was excellent and the atmosphere was delightful – smiling faces and a great welcome.”
