A KEIGHLEY district school has helped inspire its pupils to learn foreign languages by celebrating European Day of Languages.

Spanish teacher Helen Niño de Guzman and members of the modern languages department at South Craven School staged a variety of activities and provided a tempting selection of European foods for students on September 25.

The cuisine on their menu included delicacies such as "paella de pollo con chorizo", "poulet chasseur", "wurst mit pommes" and "albondigas".

Students also learned greetings in 16 different languages, tried to recognise European countries' flags, and discovered which celebrities speak more than one language.

A spokesman for South Craven School said: "The English are not well known for their ability or even desire to speak languages other than their own, so the European Day of Languages may just persuade some of us to be a bit more open to using a foreign tongue when abroad.

"Being able to greet people in their own language, to say 'thank you' and even order a drink, is a courtesy that we should all aspire to.

The variety of languages that have been integrated into English over the centuries has enriched it enormously. Anything that can encourage our students to become masters of another language can only be good."
