STEETON Primary School is a finalist in an international awards scheme.

It has been shortlisted in the Global Junior Challenge Awards, which celebrate innovative use of technology in schools.

The programme is organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in Rome, and Steeton Primary's international co-ordinator Diana Linford travelled to the Italian capital to showcase the school's eTwinning project Christmas Truce.

Pupils took part in a video-conference call carol concert with other youngsters in Europe to commemorate the 1914 Christmas Truce.

As part of the project – which has already earned several accolades – the youngsters also learned about the First World War, sharing their findings using digital tools.

And it culminated with an exchange of Christmas cards and e-cards.

Headteacher John Cooper said: "This latest achievement is amazing for everyone who took part in the project.

"The international Christmas assembly was a very moving culmination of the Christmas Truce project, helping all our children focus on the centenary of the First World War."

Mrs Linford said: "The pupils love taking part in eTwinning projects and working with children in other countries.

"It broadens and deepens their curriculum and gives them a real audience for their work."
