VOLUNTEERS who help provide Sure Start children's centre services in Keighley have been thanked for their work.

They received certificates and enjoyed a lunch at the Rainbow Children's Centre, in Braithwaite.

Volunteers' roles include running parent and toddler groups and helping people access early-learning provision and other family services.

Julie Greene, Bradford Council's early childhood services manager, said: "The event was a great way of celebrating our volunteers.

"The contribution they make is enormous and we really value what they do.

"Volunteering can be a great way for people to develop skills and confidence. Some of our volunteers have gone on to further training, including one who is undertaking a degree in social work, and others have gained employment as teaching assistants and childcare professionals.

"We would like to recruit more volunteers. It does not matter how much or how little time you are able to give."

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, executive member for education, skills and culture, said the volunteering tied in with the council's education covenant, which asks communities to play their part in helping the development and wellbeing of young people.

She added: "I want to thank all those who have volunteered to help deliver these services.

"The education covenant is about everyone playing their part in ensuring that our young people achieve their best in life.

"These volunteers are a great example of how people are already taking up that challenge and doing their bit for the children of Bradford district. It's really impressive."
