TOWN councillors in Keighley have been urged to throw their weight behind an annual winter appeal to help homeless people.

Councillor Andrea Walker asked colleagues at the latest meeting of Keighley Town Council to back the Inn Churches winter shelter project.

Cllr Walker, who is herself a volunteer for the scheme, explained that it involves All Saints' and St Mark's churches in Keighley, as well as other churches elsewhere in Bradford district.

The project equips congregations to turn their places of worship into makeshift hotels giving shelter, entertainment food and clothing to rough sleepers through the coldest months.

Cllr Walker said: "I found out about this last October. The scheme has been running in Keighley for six years.

"It does need more volunteers to cook meals and talk to these people who are homeless.

"This is a very good project and maybe as a council we can put some funding towards it."
