National League Two North: Otley 10 South Leicester 8

THIS game was balanced on a knife-edge after Otley failed to move on after they established as 10-0 lead, squandering a succession of opportunities which would have brought a bonus point against struggling opponents.

Excellent approach play was twice foiled by failing to find support, passes were ruled forward and drives were not grounded to the referee's satisfaction.

Otley kicked off with a new half-back pairing of scrum half Nicholas Coupland and Joshua Cruise, and they began seamlessly, Cruise landing a sixth-minute penalty after South Leicester collapsed a five-metre scrum under the posts after an Otley effort had been held up.

Fly half Rickie Aley missed a chance to level when Otley conceded a penalty at the re-start, but the hosts then stole a throw on the visitors’ 22 and, after the drive failed, the ball went out for centre Michael Coady to cut back and find winger James Wood at his side to force his way over, Cruise converting.

Otley held their advantage until four minutes after the break, Aley kicking a penalty, and tension increased when Cruise missed a penalty and heightened further when visititng winger Blane Howe went over with three minutes remaining, but eased when the conversion attempt rebounded from an upright.

A raking kick then found touch inches from the Otley line but the visitors’ last chance was foiled by the final whistle.
