AN APPEAL to raise funds for desperately-needed work at an historic church got off to a flying start.
A launch weekend at St Stephen's in Steeton raised £2,106.
There was a concert featuring showbiz songs and anecdotes from Karen Clegg, a spring fair in the church hall and a Songs of Praise service.
Organisers thank everyone who gave their support.
The appeal aims to raise £150,000 to replace the rotting church roof.
Vicar, the Rev Jenny Savage, said the roof – which was consecrated in 1881 – had steadily deteriorated during the past two decades.
It is intended to replace it in two phases. Work will focus first on the area of the chancel and lady chapel, and then the nave.
The next fundraising event is a family day at the church from 11am to 1.30pm on Monday.
Attractions will include an animal trail, duck race, bouncy castle, chocolate fountain, refreshments, a tombola and stalls selling cakes, toys, books, cards, crafts and bric-a-brac.
There will also be an art club display, with the chance to buy work.
