A GROUP of local men are looking forward to what promises to be a memorable 2,000 mile drive in a £300 car to raise cash for two good causes.

Haworth resident Craig Dyson along with Matthew Burtenshaw and Luke Jones from Oxenhope will join Chris Thomas from London to drive from Yorkshire to Monaco and back to support Manorlands and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

They will be one of 80 teams taking part in the wacky "Monte Carlo or Bust" banger race, which sees participants dressing up both their cars and themselves in outlandishly amusing outfits.

The wacky racers from the Worth Valley have decked out their own vehicle in appropriately Yorkshire style – with decoration resembling dry stone walling on the lower parts of the car, green "turf" on the roof and bonnet and even miniature farming equipment and sheep!

Mr Dyson, who is a professional sculptor and artist, said he and his friends would set off on June 2. He added that he had never before driven such a long distance in one go.

"One of the rules of the competition is that the car we use must cost no more than £300," he said.

"Our car, which is a Volvo V70, cost £300 and we bought it in Scotland so we've already been travelling just to bring it from there.

"None of us are mechanics so we'll just be doing our best to hold the car together for what will probably be the last journey of its life. It has already done about 200,000 miles.

"The car wasn't actually running when we first bought it, so we've had to play around with it to get it started again.

"We decorated it during the evenings down at my workshop, and it's definitely doing to turn some heads."

The three-day outward bound route will take the foursome from Namur, in Belgium, through France, the Black Forest in Germany and Switzerland.

They will be dressed in tweeds and flat caps to emphasise their (mostly) Yorkshire origins and will be up against at least one other team from the county – a group called The Yorkshire Puddings.

Mr Dyson said his team is aiming to raise a total of about £2,000, which will be evenly split between Manorlands and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

"We're aware this is going to be a challenge, but it's quite an exciting prospect," he said. "It's something a bit different for a couple of excellent causes.

"We're hoping to get local businesses to sponsor us, so we can put their branding and logo on the car windows."

Businesses interested in offering sponsorship can contact the team via its Facebook page, which is called Bronte Carlo or Bust 2016.
