STUDENTS from Oakbank School in Keighley are among more than 80 teenagers from across West Yorkshire who have graduated from a Young Firefighters scheme.

The youngsters completed a two-year Level 2 BTEC in The Fire and Rescue Service in the Community.

A graduation ceremony at brigade HQ in Birkenshaw was attended by family and friends, teachers and fire officers.

During the event, the students took part in several drills, including scenarios that saw them rescue 'casualties' from simulated building fires and a car blaze.

Amanda May, the brigade's youth trainer, said: "The young people should be extremely proud of themselves.

"They have proved to be extremely hard-working, committed and skilful, and I'm sure these qualities will be extremely useful in the future."

Ten year 11 students from Oakbank completed the course, which included practical skills, such as using breathing apparatus and hose reels and learning about fire safety awareness.

The successful youngsters were George Bailey, Vivien Bedford, Olivia Chester, Bethany Gardner, Lubo Grundza, Ethan Jefferies, Ryan Parker, Connor Plumb, Jamaal Shabir and Mia Wakefield.
