University Academy Keighley head girl Mariyam Malik has been hailed an outstanding student leader.

The teenager was recognised for her voluntary work with the school at a special ceremony hosted by the University of Bradford.

Mariyam became UAK’s recipient of the university’s Student Leaders Award for 2016.

The annual awards celebrate the work of student representatives, Peer Assisted Learners, Career Ambassadors and student volunteers. Twenty special awards are also presented for outstanding Student Leaders.

Mariyam, who was introduced by UAK governor Jon Dennis, was praised for her contribution and commitment to the role of head girl at the Beechcliffe school.

She undertook the university’s leadership training, which allowed her to lead on UAK’s Student Council and film the graduation ceremony last December.

Once she has completed her year 13 studies Mariyam will begin a BA course in Film and Television Production at the university.

The awards ceremony is organised each year by the National Union of Students in conjunction with the university.

Vice Chancellor Brian Cantor also spoke at this year’s event. Last year’s UAK winner was Danyal Javed who is currently in year 11.
