CHARLOTTE Brontë comes to the big screen as part of the annual Brontë Society summer festival weekend.

The writer of Jane Eyre is the subject of Charlotte – The Movie! which is being screened on Friday, June 10 in West Lane Baptist Centre.

The film, screened at 7.30pm, has been created by long-established female comedy duo LipService to celebrate the writer’s 200th anniversary.

The festival is built around the Brontë Society’s annual general meeting in Haworth and features events and activities for both members and the general public.

Local historian Steve Wood and co-author Peter Brears will be at the West Lane Baptist Centre on Friday at 3pm to share the history of the Withins Farms.

The pair recently published The Real Wuthering Heights, which portrayed the history and people of moorland farms including Top Withens.

The Brontë Society Annual Lecture will feature Claire Harman, author of a recent biography of Charlotte Brontë, at Hall Green Baptist Chapel on Saturday June 11 at 9.45am.

The Great Charlotte Brontë Debate will be held at West Lane Baptist Centre on Saturday, June 11 at 1.30pm.

Writers Joanne Harris, Lucy Hughes-Hallett and Katherine Langrish will discuss whether Jane Eyre or Villette was Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece.

Bestselling novelist Tracy Chevalier will chair the event.

The audience can expect mentions of Mr Rochester, mad women in the attic, Lucy Snowe and ghostly nuns.
