A MUSLIM man from Keighley has reacted angrily after discovering bacon in a supermarket pasty labelled as cheese and onion.

Imran Jhangir, 33, a practicing Muslim from Highfield, who is currently observing the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, bought the wrongly-labelled pack of two pasties from Keighley's Morrisons supermarket. Instead of cheese and onion, it contained one pasty that had a bacon and chicken filling.

And Mr Jhangir is unhappy about how the issue has been handled by the company.

He said: "It wasn't about me being given my money back.

"Morrisons wasn't prepared to tell me what measures it would take to prevent this happening again."

Mr Jhangir, who works as a secondary school ethnic minority achievement co-ordinator, explained that his religion does not allow him to eat either pork products or other meat that is not Halal.

He said he was at Keighley's Morrisons on June 11 buying food to break his Ramadan fast.

"As part of my shopping, I bought two packets, which were each clearly labelled as containing 'two cheese and onion pasties'," he added.

"I went home, opened one of the packets and put the pasties onto a plate.

"The actual pasties had labels on as well, and it was only then I noticed one of them was actually marked 'chicken and bacon'. I was shocked.

"I went back to Morrisons and spoke to the store manager, who wasn't very forthcoming.

"He offered me compensation but missed the point that this error should not have taken place.

"I am aware there was a similar situation recently in which food products from a Morrisons store [in Bradford] were wrongly labelled."

The Morrisons spokesman responded: "We are very sorry – this was a case of human error.

"The product is baked in the store and it was put in a bag with the wrong label.

"This was an accident, but we always aim to clearly label the product."
