AN INAUGURAL Solstice Saunter five-mile run and walk in aid of Manorlands was a soaraway success.

More than 450 entrants completed the event, which raised nearly £10,000 for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

The run was held at Bolton Abbey on the longest evening of the year.

It was organised by the Airedale Hospital-based running club, Airedale Dodgers.

Founder member, Dr Chris Healey, said: "We've had some fantastic feedback from runners and we are delighted with the way the whole club came together to raise this amazing total for Manorlands.

"Thanks go to the many local running clubs and individuals who supported us on this wonderful evening.

"The Airedale Dodgers have raised more than £40,000 for Manorlands in the past six years, but this has to rank as one of our best events yet – we hope to see everyone again next year!"

First home was Robin Outtersides, in a time of 30 minutes and 44 seconds.

Runner-up and first woman to finish was 20-year-old Bethan Knights, in 31 minutes 52 seconds.

Ethan Hassell was third and Matthew Bould fourth.

The event was sponsored by Keighley healthcare and mobility-product company Fenetic Wellbeing and Timothy Taylor brewery.

Jane Jenkins, head of marketing at Taylor's, said: "With Manorlands being one of our chosen charities, we were happy to sponsor the Solstice Saunter – including providing 500 bottles of Le Champion, a French-style blonde beer, for all finishers."

More than 50 volunteer marshals were present to register participants and guide people around the route.

Entertainment along the course was provided by Morris dancers.

All finishers received a bespoke Solstice Saunter medal plus goodies, including the bottle of Timothy Taylor beer and a Fenetic Wellbeing water bottle.

Andrew Wood – a Sue Ryder senior fundraiser, who was present at the event – said he was delighted with its success.

He added: "The Airedale Dodgers put a massive amount of effort into this new event and made a magnificent job of it – they should be very very proud of themselves.

"The funds raised will help us continue to care for local people with life-limiting conditions, like cancer, heart failure and lung disease."
