PEOPLE still have a chance to enter themselves into this year's Oxenhope Straw Race, which takes place on Sunday.

The deadline for entries for the popular, famously wacky fundraising event expires at 5pm tomorrow.

The race involves two-strong teams – many in fancy dress – carrying a bale of straw through the village and downing drinks at various stops.

As the race is now in its 40th year, participants will receive 40th anniversary commemorative T-shirts and completion medals.

Fundraising in the past has benefitted a host of charities, including the Sue Ryder Manorlands hospice in Oxenhope.

After two years of starting from Oxenhope Railway Station, due to the 18-month closure of the Waggon and Horses Pub, the race will again begin at noon from outside the reopened watering hole in Hebden Bridge Road.

Oxenhope Straw Race secretary, Jane Barrett, said: "There will be a slight change to the route because for the first time we will have a short off-road section from the Waggon and Horses to the church.

"It will add some more interest, but the distance of the route will stay the same – just over three miles.

"As well as the Waggon and Horses, it will take in the Bay Horse, Oxenhope Social Club, the Lamb, a checkpoint where the Shoulder of Mutton used to be – where drinks will be served by the Dog and Gun – before finishing at the Dog and Gun.

"Preparations have been going well and the number of entries we're getting is increasing. We are expecting a good turnout and hoping for good weather."
