THE £200,000 John Smith’s Cup takes centre stage at York this Saturday on day two of the July meeting.

Due off at 4.15, the hot 1m 2f handicap sees Godolphin’s Carry On Deryck, Mark Johnston’s Revolutionist, James Fanshawe’s Arthenus and David O’Meara’s Tawdeea all near the top of a wide-open market at around 10/1.

The latter won at Haydock last Saturday and should again go well if the race doesn’t come too early, while Luca Cumani’s Bermondsey, 12/1, is also worthy of consideration if making the cut.

Brian Ellison’s Top Notch Tonto is one of the most popular horses in training and would bring the house down if landing this. He was 20/1 midweek and goes into the race with solid each way claims.

Others potentially worthy of note are: 2.25 – Monotype (Yorkidding), 3.00 – Gabrial’s Kaka, 3.45 – Curbyourenthusiasm (Quest For More), 4.50 – Marsha.

Tomorrow, the 5f handicap at 2.55 may well favour low drawn horses. Charlie Hills’ A Momentofmadness is on a three-timer, while Kevin Ryan’s Bogart, though out of form, is dropped in class, loves the track and holds place credentials.

Hughie Morrison’s Compton Mill won cosily last time and could follow up in the 1m 2f handicap at 3.30, while next up is the day’s feature race, the £60,000 Group Three Summer Stakes for fillies and mares over 6f at 4.00.

Mick Channon’s top weight Divine impressed when winning easily in Ireland last time out and can be fancied again, as can the William Haggas-trained Besharah, who has been competing in much better company.
