CRAFTY people are being sought for this year's Keighley Show.

The popular handicraft section at the annual extravaganza will feature a competition to hand-knit garments suitable for premature babies.

And all the items will be donated to Airedale Hospital's special care baby unit after the event.

"The competition is free to enter and people can submit as many items as they wish," said Christine Highley, for the show.

For anyone wanting to try their hand at a bigger or more complex knitting or crocheting project, there are six other categories available.

And the handicraft section offers a huge array of other opportunities for people to showcase their talents.

It includes cross-stitch, handmade jewellery, paper and hardwood crafts and china decoration, as well as a chance to create a table centrepiece with a Hallowe'en theme.

A children's category will also give youngsters aged 15 and below an opportunity to display their skills.

"We would love to see more young people get involved," said Mrs Highley.

"We've classes in three different age groups aimed at stimulating interest in being creative.

"New for this year is the opportunity to compose a poem, with an illustration to support it, entitled 'My Dream Job'."

In the show's art category, organisers have increased flexibility in a bid to attract more budding artists.

Any medium can be used for the topics of landscape, collage and 'any other subject'.

"We are giving everyone 'carte blanche' in the hope of building-up this section – there really is no excuse for people not to have a go!" added Mrs Highley.

"We also need keen photographers to sift through their albums for examples of A Bad Hair Day, Agriculture, Weather or Building(s)!"

Fans of hit TV programme, the Great British Bake Off, have the chance to show off their baking prowess.

There are 15 different baking competitions, plus children's classes and four categories for preserves.

This year's show takes place at the usual Marley playing fields venue, on September 3.

There will be a host of attractions, including – in the main ring – stunt act Dangerous Steve, a sheep roadshow, strongman events from NRGym, the City of Bradford Pipe Band, terrier racing, vintage tractors, ferret races, Greenside alpacas and heavy horses, plus the normal range of agricultural sections across the showground.
