Nessfield Primary School staged a French Day for children in its Key Stage 1 and 2 groups.

This took place on July 14, to coincide with the national Bastille Day celebrations.

The occasion, which involved nearly 400 pupils, was organised by French teacher Sally Birks. She said: "Children had a taste of what was on offer in a French cafe and then performed a French song for another class.

"There were activities organised throughout the day, and these included the pupils working in teams of five or six to build a model of the Eiffel Tower with art straws.

"This was a group team building activity, and the pupils who built the most successful structure won a prize.

"Other events included French-themed games, a French quiz and learning about Bastille Day and France in general.

"It went really well and both class teachers and teaching assistants all took part in the fun."

The temporary cafe in the school hall offered hot chocolate, croissants and Camembert cheese.

Mrs Birks said the children were encouraged to use their knowledge of French vocabulary during the day.
