VOLUNTEERS from Keighley are being sought as part of an initiative to support bereaved relatives at inquests.

The recruits would help greet relatives attending hearings in Bradford, where inquests from across the district are heard.

They would explain procedure and protocol and provide a friendly face and emotional support.

A number of people have already come forward following an initial appeal but Martin Fleming, West Yorkshire (Western District) Coroner, is urging more people to come forward and get involved in the scheme.

Mr Fleming, whose jurisdiction covers Kirklees and Calderdale as well as Bradford, approached London-based charity Coroners’ Courts Support Service (CCSS) to see if it would set up the service in West Yorkshire.

Joanne Neill, West Yorkshire (Western Division) co-ordinator for the charity, said the initial part of training for volunteers is a significant commitment.

The CCSS is a charity that started in 2003.
