A PLANNED afternoon of fundraising entertainment in Keighley has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

The event was due to take place at Bangladeshi Community Association, in Kensington Street, this Sunday. (August 28)

It would have raised cash to help 18-year-old Eva Bhowmick carry out voluntary teaching work in South Africa, to support the educational charity Project Trust.

Eva is the granddaughter of prominent Keighley community activist Charlie Bhowmick, who conceded earlier this week (August 22) that not enough tickets have been sold to make the event a success.

"We had expected 125 people to attend but we've only sold 20 tickets," he said. "It is very disappointing, and we decided it would not be worth going ahead with it.

"We did publicise it, and I went round the Lund Park area delivering 300 leaflets, but I didn't get a single telephone call back in response."

The concert was to have included live musical performances, recitals, dance, raffles and Asian-style savoury food and drinks.

Eva, who is a sixth form student studying for her A-levels, intends to travel to South Africa in January next year to teach English and maths to orphaned children.

She must first raise £5,500 and has already been generating funds by selling CDs of her own music and organising bake sales.

Mr Bhowmick said a fundraising dinner at Panache restaurant, in Ilkley, should still be going ahead in October.
