DENHOLME Town Council has donated more than £3,000 to local groups through its Community Pot.

Residents attending Denholme Gala voted on which groups should receive cash this year from the civic fund.

Councillor Dan Miller reported on the outcome of the voting event at a recent council meeting.

Denholme Primary School received £344 to run a water activity session at Doe Park Reservoir for pupils.

The youth cafe will spend its £350 grant on permanent tables and chairs outside its premises, which can be used by all villagers.

Denholme Scouts planned to spend its £500 grant on a 40th birthday camp for members and their families.

The community association received £178 for equipment for its popular bingo sessions.

Denholme Elders Network received £500 to educate people on healthy eating, while Denholme Community Gardens received £200 and Denholme allotments £490.

Denholme library, which is run by volunteers, received £500 to help set up a children’s area.

The Community Pot is funded directly from the precept paid by Denholme residents to the town council.

In previous years, special events have been held to give residents a chance to vote on who should receive cash, but this year councillors set out to attract more votes by holding the event at the village gala.

Voting was open to any resident aged eight or over.

The voting event had to be moved to the Mechanics Institute, due to poor weather in the gala field in nearby Foster Park.
