MEMBERS of Worth Valley Horticultural Society were delighted with their annual show.

Club officials said last Sunday’s event, (September 25) held in Haworth Community Hub, had finally put the group on the ‘showing map’.

Spokesman Michael Cunningham described the show as a complete success with a hall full of competitors and visitors.

He said: “From decorative dahlias and colourful chrysanthemums to fantastic flowers, from radiant roses to magnificent marrows, a record number of 34 exhibitors displayed over 300 exhibits.

“Exhibitors travelled far and wide with two ladies coming all the way from Essex. The new enlarged baking and photography sections were both well supported by exhibitors.

“The dahlia judge commented on the high standard of blooms and both the chrysanthemum and vegetable judges were delighted by the number of exhibitors and their superb quality.”

Mr Cunningham thanked the Haworth Hub for allowing the society to stage its show at the venue, and also thanked the exhibitors, judges, committee members and volunteers who helped on the day.

The Worth Valley Horticultural Society was formed in 2012 to run a late-season flower and vegetable show in September, particularly for classes that were not ready in time for the long-established August Bank Holiday flower show in Haworth run by Haworth, Oxenhope, Lees and Cross Roads Gardeners and Allotment Holders Association.

The new show focused on chrysanthemums, but included classes for dahlias, vegetables, fruit and pot plants.

That year’s Keighley Show had to be cancelled after heavy rainfall saturated the showground, leaving Keighley Horticultural Society with no venue to hold its own annual show as part of the bigger event.

Secretary Mike Cunningham urged people who were due to exhibit at Keighley Show to instead take their flowers to the new show in Haworth, where he was also the secretary.

Over the past four years the Worth Valley Horticultural Society’s show has gone from strength to strength, even though it is only three weeks after the main Haworth show.
