North One East: Wheatley Hills 3 Pocklington 39

POCKLINGTON wrapped up another bonus-point victory at Wheatley Hills, who are traditionally bullish on their own ground.

However, the Doncaster outfit are struggling at the foot of the table this term, and on Saturday they had the size but not the bull as Pocklington dominated to record their first away win of the season, despite being without half a dozen regulars.

Pocklington eased ahead with two penalties in the first quarter from 17-year old wing Jonty Peters, and their better organisation stood them in good stead as skipper Ben Rees, playing as an emergency fly half, fashioned an opening for centre Billy Hardy to blast over, with Peters converting.

Wheatley Hills enjoyed their best spell as the interval approached and pulled back a penalty, but Pocklington had the last word with the final play of the half three minutes into stoppage time, another well-constructed back move sending full back Jack Fletcher sprinting over in the corner, Peters converting from the touchline for 20-3.

Pocklington ran the show in the second half, with flanker Johnny Wood leading the way with and without the ball.

Hardy raced clear for his second touchdown, with Peters again converting, but they then missed a series of chances to pull clear, including dropping the ball over the line.

However, the fourth score, and the bonus point, was finally obtained courtesy of a penalty try, awarded when the Wheatley pack collapsed as Pock went for a pushover, Peters adding his fourth conversion.

Pocklington then finished on a high note as Rees again pulled in the home cover to send wing Jed Jackson in at the left corner.
