A KEIGHLEY town councillor has condemned the minority of motorists who speed up a residential street in Riddlesden.

Cllr Andrea Walker, who represents the council's Riddlesden and Stockbridge ward, said the problem has been affecting Bar Lane for years.

"They are bombing up here like they think it's Brands Hatch," she said.

"It is very dangerous and one of these days someone will get killed.

"I think the speed limit here is only supposed to be about 20 or 30-mph but some people think it's a race track or a rat run.

"It mostly happens in the evenings. I live in Bar Lane and I can hear them speeding along the road at night time.

"I don't know why it's affecting this particular street, but we've had this problem for a long time.

"I want something done about it because God forbid someone crosses the road between the parked cars at the same time as one of these speeding cars."

Cllr Walker said she would be calling for an evening Speed Watch operation to be mounted in this road to help reveal the scale of the issue and hopefully deter some of the drivers responsible.

She added that the reckless driving threat was exacerbated by a lack of parking in Bar Lane.

She warned that some drivers who do not even live in this street are leaving their cars here, making it even harder for residents to find spaces for their own vehicles.
