A WOMAN from Sutton-in-Craven is preparing for a 45-kilometre charity canal walk in memory of her late father.

Angela Hayton, 43, will take part in the Skipton Canal Walk on Saturday October 29 to commemorate her father Jimmy Mason and to raise funds for the charity Marie Curie.

The trek along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal will start at 8am in Skipton and finish in Salterforth. It is being run by charity fundraising event organiser Pure Challenge.

Angela will participate along with her friends Jane Todd and Nicky Taylor-Olson, both from Pickering which is where Angela used to live.

Angela, who works as the school administrator at Sutton-in-Craven C of E Primary School, explained she had wanted to do something positive while she remembers her dad on the first anniversary of his death.

Mr Mason was 69 when he died at home in Middlesbrough in October 2015 from interstitial lung disease.

His daughter praised the efforts made to honour his last wish and ensure he could spend his final hours at home instead of in hospital.

"The doctors and nurses were amazing, what a fabulous job they do," she said.

"After being told that there was no way that dad could come home, due to the severity of his illness, we were told that there may be a chance we could bring him home, with no guarantees.

"Without question dad accepted the challenge, as he always did, and things were put into place to get him home. Everyone, doctors and nurses worked around the clock to make it possible and dad arrived home at around 2am.

"Together with him, my mum and my sister, Jo, we all had a vodka and coke and then went to sleep.

"The next evening at 10pm, a Marie Curie nurse arrived to care for dad through the night until 7am.

"This meant that although mum still wanted to be with dad, she could relax and sleep nearby knowing he was going to be well looked after.

"We had a Marie Curie nurse for two nights and she was there when dad died in the early hours.

"The nurse was absolutely fantastic and I cannot honestly put into words the gratitude I have for everything that was done to help us all.

"The nurse not only cared for dad but also supported our family. She guided us through those nights, she knew the right thing to say, at the right time. I am indebted to the charity."
