KEIGHLEY householders are being warned to check the credentials of painters and decorators before hiring them to carry out work.

The message has been issued by trade body, the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA), after a surge in contractors illegally using its logo.

Spokesman Neil Ogilvie said PDA members are required to have at least five years' experience, provide references and agree to have their work examined independently.

He added: "The logo is also our quality marque which stands for confidence, professionalism and integrity.

"There are tradesmen who imply they're in the PDA without fulfilling our strict criteria for membership, so it's important to check out their credentials.

"People can look on our website or contact us so we can verify whether or not the trader in question is one of our members."
