PUPILS in Keighley have teamed up with police officers to promote the message of safe, responsible parking outside their school.

At least 30 children at Nessfield Primary spent a week working with the police to urge motorists not to park on the zig zag lines or double yellow lines outside the school.

Learning mentor Sarah Howlett said the pupils accompanied police officers in the mornings and evenings to hand out safe parking leaflets to parents and members of the wider community.

She said the initiative has already had an impact on reducing obstructive and potentially dangerous parking near Nessfield Primary.

"We've had a few problems with parking outside the school but this has made a positive difference," she added. "And I think we have a few wannabe police officers now, as the children really loved it!

"We chose different children to take part throughout the week, mostly from years four and upwards but also some younger pupils from the School Council."

Police officers have been present at a number of Keighley district schools in recent weeks to make sure parked vehicles do not put children at risk.
