MORE than £11,000 worth of proceeds from this year's Oxenhope Straw Race have been presented to a variety of charities and other good causes.

Organisers of the popular annual race handed over the money at an event on the evening of November 28.

Oxenhope Straw Race secretary Jane Barrett said the fundraising total handed over for 2016 was £11,300.

She added: "We handed out cheques to local charities, including Manorlands Hospice, Haworth Riding for the Disabled, Parkinson's UK, Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure and Oxenhope Preschool.

"We have also donated funds to Oxenhope Parish Council, so that they can purchase a defibrillator for the benefit of the community.

"As ever our thanks go out to the local pubs and to Oxenhope Social Club along with our main sponsors Wyedean Weaving and McDowell Transport. "Without them the Straw Race wouldn't be able to run each year, and so many local people would lose much needed funding."

This year's straw race – the 40th time it has taken place – featured 215 teams competing on July 3.

Participants wore a huge variety of bizarre and hilarious costumes while they lugged a hay bale between the village's pubs, chugging beer on the way.
