A KEIGHLEY roundabout will enjoy a purple patch – thanks to the town's Rotarians.

Five thousand crocuses donated by the Rotary club have been planted on banking overlooking the Skipton Road roundabout.

The planting, which will create a swathe of purple next spring, was carried out by Bradford Council's parks and landscape team.

The initiative is part of a Rotary campaign to rid the world of polio.

"Purple is the theme because it represents the colour of the dye placed on the little finger of a child on mass immunisation days when literally millions of children in entire countries are protected against the disease," said Keighley Rotarian, Paul Milling.

"Rotary started the campaign to eradicate polio 30 years ago and during that time over 2.5 billion children have received vaccinations, resulting in the number of polio-affected countries dropping from 125 to just two.

"This latest campaign is to raise funds and awareness so that finally polio can be eradicated forever."
