SOUTH Craven MP Julian Smith has welcomed a Government announcement of £3 billion for road improvements.

He said the funding was "great news" for families and businesses which rely on the roads network to get about.

The package includes £2.3m to fix more than 40,000 potholes in North Yorkshire.

Also, £925m is allocated to tackle congestion and provide road upgrades.

And highways authorities will be invited to apply for a share of £175m being made available for road safety measures.

Mr Smith said: "The funding to fix potholes in our area will be welcome news for local motorists, many of whom have expressed their frustrations to me about the state of our roads.

"I encourage the council to make full use of its funding allocation.

"Taken together, these measures will help to build a stronger economy in the constituency and across North Yorkshire.

"They will link people with jobs and businesses to customers, ensuring a country that works for everyone, not just the privileged few."
