A TOP-level pledge has been made to tackle safety issues on the district's roads.

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, said he would continue to do all he could to combat dangerous and inconsiderate driving.

He was speaking following a conference staged to examine what more could be done to improve road safety.

Representatives of the police and partner organisations attended the event, in Leeds.

"I have listened to the people of West Yorkshire and am acting on what they have told me," said Mr Burns-Williamson.

"Road safety is regularly raised with me and is a priority in the Police and Crime Plan.

"Some great work is already underway, but this event was about what more we can do.

"It is a significant concern in communities and covers a broad range of issues, from inconsiderate parking to speeding and driving while using a mobile phone.

"It can only be tackled effectively if the police and partners like councils, the highways agency and charities work together."

Speakers at the event included Acting Superintendent Mark Jessop, who said Operation Steerside – which is tackling dangerous and illegal drivers in the Bradford district – had been hugely successful.

He added: "We are also committed to denying criminals use of the roads and have invested in a sophisticated number plate recognition network to help us identify unlawful activity.

"Combining this with effective, targeted roads policing activity, we are helping to make the county safer – not just for other road users, but for our communities as a whole."
