KEIGHLEY Bus Company has withdrawn evening services from a street after its vehicles came under fire from missile-throwing yobs.

The firm said bricks and other objects had been hurled at its buses in a spate of attacks.

Windows had been broken in some of the incidents.

Now the 845 service is no longer travelling along Smith Avenue, Wibsey, after 6pm.

The attacks have been condemned by former Bradford Council leader, Councillor David Green, whose ward includes the street.

He said: "It is criminal behaviour that is totally unacceptable.

"It is potentially dangerous for the driver and for people on the bus.

"The idiots that are doing it might think it is amusing, but potentially they could kill or seriously injure someone.

"I would urge anyone with information about who is responsible to come forward."

Cllr Green also bemoaned the inconvenience of having to divert the bus for people who use the service.

"We ward councillors have contacted the bus company for more information and are also liaising with police," he said.

A spokesman for Keighley Bus Company said: "We have had six to eight incidents over two weeks. Various missiles have been thrown at buses by youths.

"It endangers customers and that is the key driver behind this decision – to protect customers and staff on the buses.

"There is no end date yet and it is only for buses after 6pm. The buses will still finish in the same place, but they will just take a different route.

"We're really sorry for any inconvenience this will cause, but we hope people will understand that the safety of our customers is of the utmost importance."

Anyone with information about those responsible for the attacks can contact West Yorkshire Police on 101.
