A WOMAN at a care home in Cross Hills has celebrated turning 100 on New Year's Day 2017.

Family members turned out in force to congratulate Mary Shaw, who lives in Townend Close Care Home.

She was born Mary Ingle in Windhill, Shipley, on New Year’s Day 1917. She was a keen cricketer and a member of Windhill Ladies Cricket Team.

She married Frank Shaw in 1940 and spent most of her married life in Bingley.

During her time in the town she was a member of Bingley United Reformed Church.

Mrs Shaw was a keen walker and also became skilled at making cakes for public and social occasions such as weddings and christenings, after learning this skill at night class.

After her husband's death in 1996 she moved to be near her daughter in Nelson, Lancashire.

Mrs Shaw has been living at Townend Close Care Home since leaving her home in Nelson in March 2010, and now has three children, 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Alison Dinneen, home administrator at Townend Close, said the traditional congratulatory letter from the Queen was delivered to the home on December 30, but handed to Mrs Shaw by her family during her birthday tea party.

Ms Dinneen added: "We had a tea party in the afternoon in our dining room, and Mary's son arranged for her family to come along. It went very well and everyone really enjoyed themselves."
