CELIA Hickson – president of Bradford Rowing Club – spoke to Keighley Soroptimists about how the organisation had battled back from the brink of extinction following devastating floods.

The Boxing Day deluge of 2015 flooded the 150-year-old clubhouse, on the banks of the River Aire at Baildon.

Dr Hickson said the building was subsequently reconstructed, brick by brick, on the opposite side of the river.

The floods also badly damaged a weir.

A massive fundraising campaign coined-in £100,000, with backing from many organisations including Rotary clubs, Bradford Grammar School and Sporting England.

There was also an online page for donations.

"This was a remarkable feat and the club held a regatta last June – having rescued itself from extinction and made the weir safer for many years to come," said a Soroptimists spokesman.

Dr Hickson also spoke about her fundraising efforts for Bradford Deaf Centre, which she said was in desperate need of refurbishment.

About £30,000 has been raised so far.
