A NEW booklet aimed at supporting people living with dementia has been published by a Keighley charity.

"Journey through Dementia" has been created by the Dementia Friendly Keighley group. (DFK)

The project was masterminded by Rod Tickner, one of the original committee members of DFK.

He said: “We knew there is no one typical journey for those living with dementia.

"Each individual has a unique experience and the pace of change and the actual changes are different. So any portrayal has to be a broad approach, which we've done by breaking the journey into broad stages.

“We took down stories from carers charting their successes and challenges as examples. The stories made fascinating reading and we're grateful for these individuals being prepared to allow us to share their stories with a wider audience.

"The original idea was for an A3 sheet with a simple flow diagram linking to a variety of agencies. We've ended up with a 24-page booklet and a separate directory of services."

DFK project support volunteer Sandra Kelly said: "Thank you to Keighley Town Council for their grant of £1,000 which enabled us to print 1,000 copies of this booklet.

"We hope to place them in GP surgeries, Airedale Hospital, Keighley Town Hall, Keighley Library, and in other public places.

"They will also be available from our information stand, which is in Airedale Shopping Centre on the first Wednesday and the third Friday of every month from 11am to 2pm."
