TALKS with Bradford Council to find out what public services might be devolved to Keighley Town Council are finally making progress, according to a member of the town council.

Councillor Anayat Mohammad updated colleagues on his meeting on February 17 with senior Bradford Council officers to discuss its "New Deal" initiative.

The New Deal involves an attempt to devolve some Bradford Council services to parishes to cope with the massive cuts in funding being sustained by the district council.

Cllr Mohammad said: "I was quite disappointed with the way these talks were going, they seemed to be wasting everyone's time.

"But we've had a senior intervention. Ian Day, who is Bradford's assistant director for neighbourhood and customer services, is now involved.

"Our last meeting was quite productive and there seemed to more intent for devolution.

"While we can't report that we'll become independent next year, they were quite keen for us to take on street cleansing.

"Clearly they understand that we do mean business."
