PUPILS at South Craven School got to grips with some of the complex skills of journalism during the latest annual BBC School Report News Day.

They took part in this year's News Day on March 16, working to a 2pm deadline to have their own news stories finished and a 4pm deadline to get these stories published online.

A spokesman for South Craven said: "The students worked hard all morning looking at the day's newspapers where they examined local, national and international stories.

"This was followed up with a meeting to decide which articles to cover and to allocate roles and responsibilities.

"From 10.10am students were gathering evidence, interviewing people and making film reports.

"As reports were written they were forwarded to the 'editor' for checking and then on to the 'IT department' for uploading onto the website.

"The stories our roving reporters decided to cover were: fracking, the rainforests, a debate on zoos, a Crufts report, an interview with the famous runner Ron Hill and of course the sports and weather."

South Craven English teacher Beth Howe added: "Our students have worked really hard, chasing stories, getting interviews and working to deadlines.”
