A PAIR of teams from a Keighley school took part in a contest to test the pupils' knowledge of maths.

The year 10 students from Holy Family Catholic School were up against pupils from nine other schools after entering the Maths Feast challenge held at Dixons McMillan Academy, in Bradford.

Maths Feast is a demanding team competition testing mathematical, team-working and communication skills. The contest is organised on a regional basis each year with over 70 events taking place across England in February and March.

The Holy Family students competing in Bradford took part in rounds with quirky titles such as “Amuse Bouche”, “Starter” and “Dessert”.

As well as answering questions similar to those in the television gameshow Countdown, the pupils had to complete problem solving activities and a mathematical relay.

The Holy Family team of eight students, comprising Mariam Ahmed, Ellie Bamfield, Heather Flaherty, Marianna Gallucci, Oscar Lupton, Serena Miller, Beenish Shabir and Bethany Wilson, won one of the rounds outright. They also took home the Best Teamwork trophy.

Richard Wheeler, deputy head of mathematics at Holy Family, said: "It was a very creditable performance from a good solid team of competent mathematicians."
