PARKSIDE School in Cullingworth hosted the first meeting of the Mental Health Champions Network.

Educational psychologist Philippa Grace co-ordinated the gathering of representatives from more than 20 primary and secondary schools in the area.

Jeanette Butterworth, Parkside’s Head of Special Educational Needs, said the meeting was a great success.

She said: “New initiatives were rolled out so that there is a cohesive, joint, supported approach to supporting young people in schools.”

Jeanette said that Parkside’s own Well-Being Champion was Robert Johnson.

She added: “We have established and implemented our Emotional Well-being strategy for over one year which is having an extremely positive impact on the health of young people at our school."

Mental Health Champions are part of the district-wide initiative to address mental health matters within schools.

Research has shown that most young people and their parents feel confident accessing support from within the communities in which they live and learn, and that school staff are the professionals they trust the most.

The initiative aims to give effective support as early as possible when students experience mental health distress or difficulties.
